Chapter 11
11
“Ugh, hold on! I feel like I’m really being executed.”
“Then lie still. I’ll cover your face.”
I’m being treated like an unwanted salon customer. In my past life, the salon staff always covered my face with a towel when they washed my hair. It’s a little sad.
I turned over and lay still. He lathered shampoo into my hair and asked, “Is the water temperature okay?”
“Yes…”
It’s like paradise. I quickly became drowsy from the touch of his hands washing my hair. I thought washing my face while washing my hair was a bit much, but overall, I was satisfied.
“This is so refreshing. Have you worked at a massage parlor?”
“I’ve never done this for anyone before.”
He seemed pleased with my compliment, and the pressure increased.
“It’s starting to hurt a little.”
“I thought you liked it rough.”
Is making such misleading remarks his specialty?
It was then.
“What a ridiculous sight.”
Mathias’s characteristically cynical voice came from somewhere.
When I pulled off the towel covering my face, I saw Mathias in my upside-down vision. He stood with his arms crossed, looking down at me.
“Hello. Good morning.”
“Who are you greeting?”
At Dante’s question, I only turned my eyes to look up at him.
“Oh, the owner of the mansion I mentioned before.”
“…Let’s make sure you go to the hospital today.”
He seems to think I’m a bit strange.
I turned my head to ask Mathias why he didn’t save me yesterday, but he was long gone.
I’ve really become a strange person.
Before going out, I wrapped a scarf around my head. It seems malicious rumors have spread within the capital, so I need to hide my brown hair.
“There’s no need to hide your hair. It’s a relatively common color.”
That was Dante’s opinion, wearing thin silver-rimmed glasses at my request.
He looks very intellectual in his gentleman’s fedora and three-piece suit.
“Dante, the glasses suit you well.”
“They suit you too. That, uh, scarf.”
Is he just complimenting me out of courtesy?
We soon headed to the capital square on a bicycle. Dante was driving the bicycle, and I was riding on the back.
His waist is thin for someone with such broad shoulders and chest. Very firm. This must be the muscle built from household labor…
“Please stop. It tickles.”
He scolded me for wrapping my arms around his waist and fidgeting.
“Yes…”
I restrained myself and tightened my grip on my fingertips, which were moving on their own.
Dante, who was pedaling hard, said, “This bicycle can be imbued with Magical Power.”
“What? Isn’t it just a normal bicycle?”
“It’s a Magic Tool for transportation. We’re already here.”
This man arrived even earlier than when I rode the bicycle. No wonder it didn’t take long even though the distance was quite far.
It was a special bicycle. But I don’t have any Magical Power? If I did, I would have gotten a national Ability User license.
“I was able to use it even though I don’t have Magical Power.”
“It must have contained residual Magical Power. The person who used it before must have been an Ability User.”
After parking the bicycle in the square, we went straight to the hospital. Healers are few in number and expensive, so commoners like me usually see a general doctor.
An elderly doctor examined my perfectly fine ankle and wrist, then gave me a look that asked why I had come at all.
“I was injured a bit when a thief broke in last night. I’m going to the police station.”
I conveyed my intentions with my eyes.
Fortunately, he was a doctor with long experience and wisdom.
“Well, I’ll write you a diagnosis for sprains and bruises. Would eight weeks be enough?”
“Yes, that’s exactly it.”
I gave him a thumbs-up under the desk, and the doctor wrapped a bandage around my arm for show.
After paying the medical bill, we left the hospital and arrived at the police station in the next block.
I told the police officer, who seemed to be suffering from postprandial sleepiness, about the damages from last night.
“So, you’re saying you were held captive?”
The listless police officer rubbed his eyes and yawned repeatedly. My trust began to erode with each yawn.
“Yes, please go and arrest them immediately.”
“Everyone is out on assignment right now, so we don’t have enough personnel. We’ll go tomorrow. Please endure one more day.”
I made a dumbfounded expression. Why is the police officer so irresponsible? Does he just think they’re petty thieves?
Then Dante leaned back languidly in his chair and raised his chin.
“Then can I handle it myself? It just so happens that tomorrow is the day to dispose of burnable trash.”
The police officer’s eyes widened at the dangerous remark made by the obviously intimidating man.
“What are you…”
“I am Brigadier General Dante Van Dyke of the Magical Special Forces. Even on Discharge Hold, my Summary Judgement Rights and Investigative Rights are still valid.”
When he took out his badge from his pocket and presented it, the police officer sat up straight as if he had completely woken up.
“Ah, Commander, I didn’t recognize you. I apologize for not recognizing you. We will be dispatched by evening, so please wait.”
He completely changed his attitude once he revealed his identity. He should have done that from the start. Is the world really about money and power?
I’m benefiting from having a great housekeeper. I snorted triumphantly and got up from my seat.
Ah, wait a minute. Come to think of it, this makes the disguise meaningless. The police now know that I’m involved with this man, right?
I sighed and slumped my shoulders. Now that I’ve let that revolutionary man into my mansion, it seems I can’t avoid being deeply entangled with him. I can only hope that my worries don’t come true.
After reporting the incident, we went back to the square.
He offered his arm as if to escort me. I hesitated slightly before linking my arm with his.
Wow, his arm is so firm…
“Is touching things a habit of yours?”
“Yes. Is that not allowed?”
My fingers moved automatically. I decided to just be brazen about it.
Then he nodded as if he couldn’t help it.
“Then I suppose it can’t be helped. I must follow my master’s wishes.”
“By the way, are you on Discharge Hold? You wrote ‘former commander’ on your resume. I thought you had quit completely.”
At my question, he made a regretful face.
“I thought so too, but I received a letter saying I was put on Discharge Hold. It seems the military doesn’t want to let me go.”
I wouldn’t want to let him go either if I were them. That man is an incredible talent.
While walking down the street, I spotted a cafe selling various desserts and drinks and stopped.
“Dante, do you want to go there?”
“Understood.”
As soon as we entered the store, we were greeted by a sweet smell. Sliced cakes, chocolates, and breads were displayed in various types.
But the seats look a bit, well, very uncomfortable. The small chairs and low tables looked like they would break in ten minutes if muscular people sat on them. Everyone was hunched over, barely managing to drink their tea.
“It’s kind of… a trendy cafe…”
I erased the unnecessary thoughts and approached the staff to order. But is this even the right language? It’s written in something like an ancient language. I had no choice but to point at the cakes on display.
“Uh, two of these and two coffees, please.”
Then the employee wearing an apron put his hands together and drooped his eyebrows.
“Customer, please provide the exact order name.”
“I…”
How am I supposed to read this, you crazy bastard!
At that moment, Dante approached and scanned the menu.
“Can we have two φρουλα τορτα and two καφ?”
How did he read that!
The employee didn’t release his clasped hands even with Dante’s correct pronunciation.
“Customer, please be polite when making inquiries and orders. It’s difficult.”
“Please.”
Dante was surprisingly patient. Thanks to him, we’ll be able to order safely. I took out my coin purse and asked the employee, “How much is it? The price isn’t listed.”
“It’s listed in the Instellar Magazine published daily. Many customers only ask for the price and don’t order, so it’s difficult. Please note in advance that we do not accept inquiries without intent to purchase.”
This son of a bitch. I want to punch him. I hid my true feelings and forced a smile.
“Just calculate it for me…”
“Yes, customer. It’s 80,000 Give.”
How much do they value politeness that they even use honorifics for money?
Dante paid that outrageous amount.
After going through all sorts of twists and turns, we were finally able to eat the dessert and drink the coffee after completing this difficult ordering process.
“Dante, thank you for the meal.”
“Hmm, the coffee tastes good. The spelling on the menu is a mess, though.”
Dante, who was born and raised in the city, seemed used to this kind of thing and didn’t have any particular complaints.
“Your arm seems to be better.”
Dante said, looking at my arm moving freely in front of the food.
I scratched my cheek awkwardly and laughed.
“The doctor at the hospital we went to earlier must be a master. It’s all healed.”
“That’s a relief.”
After finishing the cake and drinking all the coffee, I got up to leave. Although the ordering process was difficult, the cake was quite delicious, so I also placed a takeout order in the middle.
Before leaving the cafe, I approached the employee to pick up the cake I had ordered for takeout.
“Excuse me, esteemed employee. I ordered a cake for takeout, could you please bring it out?”
“φρουλα τορτα?”
“Ah, yes, that one.”
At my answer, the employee put his hands together and made a pitiful expression. What’s wrong now!
“We just ran out of stock. We announced it in the magazine published tomorrow.”
You crazy…
Capital life is too hard. I’m never coming here again.
