55 - Marquis Maron
Episode 55
* * *
As soon as the pigs were paired, the eyes of the estate residents were glued to the pigpen. When would they mate, did pigs have a separate heat cycle, was there anything we could do to help?
I watched them gather in front of the pigpen day and night, chattering away, and clicked my tongue.
"The pigs are going to get annoyed and not do it."
"Why?"
"How can they have romance when humans are all gathered in front of their door, watching them intently, waiting for babies? Even a thousand years of love would cool down."
"Ah…."
Fatima, embarrassed, chased the people away.
"Shoo, shoo! Everyone, go back to what you were doing!"
"Yeah, let's go dig up potatoes."
"We'll finish building the fishing spot by the lake."
"Mister, are you catching any fish?"
"Not yet. I guess it needs more Purification."
As they said that, they subtly glanced at me, the lumberjacks had become foxes, which was funny.
"I'm not going to Purify there today."
"Who told you to? It's up to the lord."
"But why are you looking at me with such expectant eyes?"
"I was just looking. You eat so many potatoes, but you don't gain weight. Maybe we need more flour? Should we brew some alcohol?"
"What are you going to do with me if I gain weight? Eat me?"
"We wouldn't eat you. We have pigs, why would we eat the lord?"
Actually, my attention these days was entirely focused on The tainted. After Asta copied the list stolen from Grandis for me, I read it over in detail once more.
I wondered if any of the zombies I encountered while wandering the Contaminated Zone were on the list.
But in this place, not 21st-century South Korea, it was difficult to identify the target based on gender and age alone.
So, I decided to go out to the Contaminated Zone again this time.
"Are you going towards Grandis?"
"No, that place is ominous. I'm going towards Enif. Judging by the fact that they couldn't seal off the city, it seems like the power of the Order has weakened."
Reikart put down a heavy sack of potatoes and said,
"I'll go with you."
"No. It's easier for me to go alone because I don't have to Purify, but if I take you, I have to Purify, which is a hassle. So, just keep digging up potatoes here."
"Why don't you live a little more inconveniently sometimes?"
"Hey!"
"I also have things to get in Enif."
"What else do you need?"
"It's autumn."
"So what?"
"Ha…."
Reikart asked,
"How did you live here last winter?"
"How did I live? I just lived."
"Fire? Firewood? Clothes? Shoes?"
"Fire… I just made it, I gathered fallen branches for firewood, I wrapped a blanket around myself for clothes, and shoes, well."
"I can't live like that."
Reikart said confidently.
"I was raised preciously."
Ah, right.
I ended up going to Enif with the young master who was raised preciously and couldn't survive the winter as primitively as I could.
There were many things to do before winter, so the order was quite large this time. Among them were fur, cotton, sewing-related items, and winter shoes and cold-weather gear.
I wrote down everything my Omnivores wanted on a piece of paper, and then I laughed in disbelief as I read it one by one.
"These guys, seriously… Do you even know how much this all costs? Do you think money grows on trees? How far are you planning to leech off me, you freeloaders!"
"It does grow on trees."
Reikart mentioned the treasure vault in the basement.
I glared at him once and then took some jewels and went outside.
"Doraji!"
"Ah, why are you calling me?"
"Don't you need anything?"
"I'm fine."
My Doraji twisted his lips into a smile.
"What kind of civilized, pampered nonsense would a dirty, evil fake Tree Sprite need? I should be atoning and begging before the great nature every day."
"Huh?"
"The great King of Spirits said he would erase and destroy me without a trace, so before that happens, buy me a hammer and chisel to carve 'A pitiful Tree Sprite closed his eyes here' on a tombstone."
Wow, amazing.
"Why is he so twisted?"
"He's been like that since Princess Asta's Spirit Bird visited last time. I guess he was shocked."
"Then he should take it out on that bird, why is he doing this to me?"
"You said it's natural and obvious for a natural Spirit to hate beings imbued with Magical Energy."
He overheard that?
I looked at him in astonishment, and Doraji raised only one side of his upper lip and said,
"Princess or whatever, Spirit Bird or King of Wind Spirits, if I meet them again, I'll pluck all their feathers and make Samgyetang out of them, so you know. I'll put chili peppers, Doraji, and a Magic Core in their stomachs and boil them."
Ah, I shouldn't have taught him about Samgyetang.
And I taught him wrong.
