It Feels Like I’m About to Be Divorced, but My Husband Is My Favorite [Novel] Chapter 17 – The Accepted Proposal

Previously

The Basilian family gathers for a rare dinner where the Duke questions Evgenia about Kayden's visit. Evgenia manipulates the narrative, claiming Kayden insulted her by suggesting she become his mistress, which enrages her father and brothers.

I stared at Alexis with a puzzled expression before quickly looking away.

“I am sorry, Father.”

The Duke looked at me with a bewildered expression.

“Sorry? Why…? Ah…”

Then, after a brief pause, his expression hardened.

“Evgenia, if you had foolishly stood there in silence without uttering a single word, I would have been far angrier. You did well!”

I had expected him to scold me for recklessly laying a hand on a member of the imperial family, no matter how much the Crown Prince provoked me.

Yet instead of a reprimand, I was praised. I was taken aback to realize that Evgenia's seemingly reckless behavior was not entirely unjustified.

“Are you certain it is acceptable to say that? After all, I laid a hand on a member of the imperial family. What if His Highness the Crown Prince brings it up later? If His Majesty the Emperor finds out, it could cause trouble for the family…”
“How much harm could a frail young lady like you possibly inflict by striking someone? Especially against someone like a Sword Master, a war hero. To him, it must have felt like a fly attacking him!”

“…”

“In any case, if he possesses any sense of honor, he wouldn't dare bring it up. Furthermore, something so trivial will hardly shake the ducal house of Basilian. His Majesty the Emperor knows full well what our family represents to the Eleos Empire.”

As a pillar of the empire and a prominent supporter of the Emperor, the Duke spoke with firm confidence.

Nevertheless, remembering how the Basilian family ultimately met its downfall because of Evgenia in the novel left a bittersweet taste in my mouth.

‘Well, I suppose that will not happen now,’ I thought resolutely.

Even so, a lingering unease remained. I shook my head, attempting to brush aside the anxiety.

“That is a relief, but I did nothing worthy of praise. I would prefer to let this pass quietly.”

At my words, Sionel clicked his tongue in clear annoyance, as if he were ready to send a formal complaint to the imperial family. Feeling embarrassed, I avoided his gaze and stated the real reason I had sought out the Duke today.

“I only wished to say that, as I mentioned before, I would like to proceed with the marriage as soon as possible.”
“Are you certain your resolve has not wavered?”
“Not in the least. In fact, meeting His Highness today has only strengthened my resolve.”

The Duke gazed at me intently, as though measuring my sincerity. Surprisingly, Sionel, who was usually skeptical of my words, nodded in agreement, seemingly still incensed by the Crown Prince's conduct.

The Duke let out a soft sigh upon seeing the determined look in my eyes.

“Very well, then. As it happens, what I wished to discuss with you pertains to that very matter.”
“That…?”
“The reply to the proposal has arrived.”

“…!”

Finally!

Had I been holding my breath without realizing it? Suppressing the surge of excitement, I clenched my fists tightly.

Though I wanted to cheer and throw my hands up in celebration, I could not let my emotions show here.

“Did they… accept?”

I was certain they had, given the story and circumstances, but I needed to hear the confirmation to put my mind at ease. The Duke let out a dry laugh.

“Of course. What man would not welcome you as his bride with open arms?”

“…”

When it came to his family, his judgment seemed to falter, I thought, shaking my head inwardly while trying to calm my racing heart.

The thought that all that remained was marrying Euclid made my lips feel dry.

Just then, the Duke frowned.

“I was annoyed by how long it took for the reply to arrive, but looking at the date beside the signature, it seems they responded the very day the proposal was delivered.”

A signature? Did that mean there was a document in this mansion bearing Euclid's own signature?

The unexpected piece of information set my heart racing. Clasping the hem of my dress tightly, I listened as the Duke continued with a faint scowl.

“Apparently, they sent the reply via standard carriage, which is why it took over three days to reach the capital. Tsk, for a family that has produced generations of mages, they do not even possess a single mana-powered carriage. Not that it matters much—given how the Magic Tower recently raised mana stone prices, they probably couldn't afford one anyway.”

My racing heart slowed for a moment as I swallowed hard.

I, too, had been waiting anxiously for the response to the proposal, only to find out there was a reason behind the delay.

I knew they were struggling financially, but imagining Euclid living under such harsh circumstances filled me with sorrow.

Perhaps my feelings showed on my face, for the Duke hesitated before speaking.

“Evgenia, do not worry. When you go there, I will ensure you have plenty of magical carriages for your convenience.”
“…Just carriages?”
“Of course not! I will send plenty of mana stones as well.”

There was no reason to refuse, so I offered a radiant smile and asked cautiously:

“Could you send one to the Duchy of Rodion in advance? It seems they will need one for their journey to the capital.”

Two days was far too long, and I could not bear the thought of Euclid enduring the hardships of a carriage journey. The Duke, realizing he had not considered that, nodded.

“Evgenia, I had no idea you were so thoughtful. I was already considering selecting knights for you to take along after the wedding. I looked into it, and the evaluations from the knight order were excellent.”
“…Pardon?”
“The knight who stood guard at the door when I told you to reflect on your mistakes in your room last time. Is he the one you have in mind?”
“Ah… yes.”

Though I had no idea what he was talking about, I nodded instead of displaying my confusion.

The Duke smiled with satisfaction, then suddenly let out a sigh.

“I thought we could hold an engagement ceremony for now and postpone the wedding for a year, but judging by how persistent you are, I suppose I must yield.”

His grumbling remarks sent a chill down my spine, but his next statement brought me relief.

“My resolve has not changed; I would like to proceed as quickly as possible. There is no need for a grand affair; a simple ceremony with only family will suffice.”
“Yet this is the marriage of a lady of the Basilian family…”
“That matters little to me. Besides, with His Highness the Crown Prince departing for the front lines, I would like to leave the capital before he returns.”

I poured all my desire to avoid the Crown Prince into my words, reiterating my stance firmly. The Duke reluctantly masked his disappointment and finally yielded.

“If that is your wish, so be it. I will contact the Temple immediately. A ceremony at the Temple is the quickest option…”

I remembered from the novel that Evgenia and Euclid had held a modest ceremony at the Temple. I nodded in agreement, only for someone to shout:

“Wait! A wedding?!”

Alexis abruptly interrupted the smooth flow of the conversation, which had been proceeding like a calm stream of water.

His outburst took me and the rest of the family by surprise.

In frustration, Alexis yelled at the top of his lungs.

“What under the heavens is all this?!”
“Where do you think you are raising your voice? If you had been listening, you would know by now.”
“No, I mean! Melissa clearly said she refused. So what is this about a wedding?!”

Ah, Alexis was even lashing out at Sionel like that.

For some reason, I found myself in a good mood and simply observed the scene like a bystander, watching Alexis lose his temper and Sionel lightly shake his head.

Sionel sighed and spoke.

“Evgenia is getting married.”
“To whom, exactly?”
“The Duke of Rodion.”
“Ha!”

Alexis let out a scoff, completely stunned, and slowly surveyed the dining room.

Unlike him, who was visibly shaken, the faces of the other family members showed not the slightest hint of surprise. Realizing this, Alexis muttered under his breath.

“Was I the only one who didn't know?”

“…”

“Melissa, did you know as well?”

Sensing the tense atmosphere, Melissa nodded hesitantly under Alexis's persistent questioning.

It dawned on Alexis that even Melissa, who had only recently joined the ducal household, was aware of my marriage. His face flushed, turning a mix of pale and red in an instant.

“How… how could this…”

Gasping for breath, overwhelmed by betrayal, Alexis turned toward me and shouted,

“Even if you hate me, how could you do this?!”
