12. Group Living Was Never in the Cards for Me
“I believe in you, Lady.”
“And I believe that you will help us escape this island. I believe it.”
I couldn’t sleep well last night because of what Luzef said.
What kind of ridiculous misunderstanding is he having to say such a thing?
Besides, wasn't Luzef a picky man who kept doubting me, just like Asdal?
‘Seriously, damn it, I’m busy enough trying to escape on my own, and now you want me to take everyone with me?’
This is driving me crazy. Do they really think of me as their ‘leader’?
As I was thinking about various things with a complicated mind, dawn broke and it became morning.
Early in the morning, I ran into Enoch and Kaiden in front of the cabin on my way back from the valley.
“Where have you been?”
I shrugged at Kaiden’s question and replied.
“There’s a valley nearby. I just went on a little reconnaissance. Where are you two going?”
“To get some breakfast. Want to come with us?”
At Kaiden’s question, I nodded and brought a basket and a Wooden Knife needed for collecting mushrooms.
While collecting mushrooms near the cabin together, I sighed.
“Why are you sighing like that from the morning?”
Kaiden, who came out to collect mushrooms with me, asked as he saw me. I put the picked mushrooms into the wooden basket and turned to look at him.
“No, it’s just… Will we be able to escape the island?”
At my question, Kaiden looked at me with a face that I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
“How can you not know that?”
Kaiden crossed his arms and scolded me as if I was saying something funny. At his words, I frowned and tilted my head. What is he talking about again?
‘Wait, does he also see me as a leader?’
For a moment, I felt tired and looked at him, moving my lips before closing them again. I’m too lazy to explain now.
And Kaiden’s attitude was actually a bit ambiguous. I don’t even know if he really likes me or not.
Even though he acts like he cares for me in an exaggerated way, I sometimes feel suspicious of his gaze.
‘Maybe it’s because he can’t control his emotions because of the earring?’
That’s when it happened.
“Margaret.”
I was helplessly pulled by the force pulling my shoulder.
A solid chest touched my back. Thick arms reaching from behind gently wrapped around my shoulders.
It was Enoch.
“I came to help.”
Kaiden, who was facing us, raised both hands as if he was annoyed.
I turned around and looked at Enoch’s face. Enoch’s worried gaze reached me and then fell away.
“Don’t wander around alone, stay by my side. Sometimes people are more dangerous than Monsters.”
Enoch muttered, glaring at Kaiden openly.
They cooperate well when there is a common enemy, but when we are alone, they are wary again.
Basically, Enoch hates and is wary of everyone except me.
I’m grateful that he excluded me from that standard of hatred and wariness, but since I’ll be living with annoying people for the time being, such a hostile attitude is troublesome.
If a conflict arises in the cramped cabin, it will really be a disaster.
“It’s okay. We’ve picked all the mushrooms for now, so shall we go back?”
I said, showing Enoch the wooden basket I was holding.
As we were about to return together, I found something pure white sparkling under my feet.
“Huh…? What is this?”
It looked like a very small egg, about the size of a finger.
