🌑 Chapter 5: The Chairman in the Convenience Store
Morning in Mapo felt heavy.
Gray sky.
Cold air.
And a silence that lingered longer than it should.
Hana pushed open the door of a small convenience store.
Ding.
The soft bell echoed.
“…Just coffee,” she muttered.
Her reflection in the glass fridge caught her off guard.
Oversized glasses.
Messy hair.
Dark circles she couldn’t hide anymore.
“…You look terrible.”
She walked to the refrigerated section.
Reached for a canned latte—
And froze.
Another hand reached for the same one.
Long fingers.
Clean.
Familiar.
Too familiar.
Hana slowly turned.
“…You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Kang Ji-hoon stood beside her.
Like he had always been there.
Like he belonged.
But he didn’t.
Not here.
Not in this place.
He wore a charcoal coat.
Simple.
But still—
Too expensive for this small store.
Too him.
“You eat ramyun now?” Hana asked, her voice tight.
She nodded toward the small plastic table nearby.
A cup of instant ramyun steamed quietly.
Ji-hoon followed her gaze.
Then looked back at her.
“I eat whatever interests me.”
He handed her the latte.
Their fingers brushed.
Just for a second.
“And right now…”
A pause.
“…this place interests me.”
“Stop following me,” she whispered sharply.
Her eyes darted around.
A student paying at the counter.
A worker half-asleep near the window.
Normal people.
Normal lives.
“This isn’t your world.”
Ji-hoon tilted his head slightly.
“I decide where I belong.”
Then—
Lower.
Closer.
“Hana-ya.”
Her jaw tightened.
She turned away.
Paid quickly.
And left.
Cold air hit her again.
She walked fast.
Faster.
Toward the subway.
Rush hour.
Crowded.
Loud.
Perfect.
She blended into the sea of people.
Shoulder to shoulder.
Faces she didn’t know.
Didn’t care about.
“This is better…”
She whispered to herself.
“He won’t follow me here.”
“…Are you sure?”
Her body froze.
That voice.
Behind her.
Too close.
She didn’t turn.
Didn’t dare.
The train arrived.
Doors slid open.
The crowd pushed.
And suddenly—
She was inside.
Too close.
Too tight.
Too warm.
And—
Him.
Right behind her.
No.
Not behind.
Against her.
Her breath caught.
His chest pressed lightly against her back.
His scent—
Sandalwood.
Expensive.
Dangerous.
It wrapped around her like a trap.
“Is this your life?”
His voice was low.
Right next to her ear.
Warm breath against her skin.
“Being suffocated by strangers?”
Hana clenched her hands.
“It’s an honest life.”
She refused to turn.
Refused to meet his eyes.
“Something you wouldn’t understand.”
A quiet chuckle.
Close.
Too close.
“You’re wrong.”
His hand moved.
Gripping the pole above her head.
Trapping her.
Without touching.
But still—
Too close.
“I understand perfectly.”
Her heart pounded.
“You think this protects you.”
A pause.
“Look around.”
Hana’s eyes flickered.
People everywhere.
No one looking.
No one noticing.
“To them…”
His voice softened.
Dangerously.
“…we’re just another couple.”
Her breath hitched.
“No one is coming to save you.”
The train jolted.
Hard.
Hana lost her balance.
For a split second—
His arm wrapped around her waist.
Steady.
Firm.
Electric.
Time stopped.
Just for a moment.
“Let go,” she whispered.
Her voice barely steady.
“I will…”
He leaned closer.
Close enough that she could feel his voice more than hear it.
“…when we reach your stop.”
Her heart raced uncontrollably.
“But remember this, Hana.”
Silence.
Heavy.
“Even underground…”
A pause.
“…the sun still belongs to me.”
Her fingers trembled.
“And so does your future.”
The train sped forward.
But Hana felt like she wasn’t moving at all.
